Blue Hollywood Street Sanctuary is a Black-led community resource center and harm reduction program located in one of the most underserved areas of Skid Row, Los Angeles. As the only harm reduction program in the area that emerged directly from the streets, BHSS was founded by and for individuals with lived experience.
The community we serve is largely unhoused or precariously housed, Black, brown, elderly and disabled with many individuals experiencing the compound impact of the racialized War on Drugs and prison system.
Currently pending 501(c)(3) status, BHSS has been a vital part of the Skid Row community for six years, growing through “boots-on-the-ground” leadership that intimately understands and reflects the community’s unique needs and strengths.
The Sanctuary
Our outdoor, street-based community center and refuge is open 24 hours a day, providing water, basic resources and harm-reduction supplies, as well as a place to rest, socialize, celebrate and receive on-demand wound care, non-coercive spiritual counseling and casework services such as housing referrals and system navigation.
Harm reduction
We are a syringe exchange and distribute clean needles, safer smoking kits, condoms and life-saving naloxone as well as water, daily multi-vitamins, wound care supplies and more through our community center and weekly outreach. Our harm reduction efforts have led to the reversal of more than 100 overdoses in the last year.
Community events
Blue Hollywood Street Sanctuary hosts weekly and monthly social events with the aim of providing a sense of community and dignity that are often missing in traditional service settings.
Through ongoing and long-term relationship building, we work to build a safe and joyful space where participants feel seen and valued, allowing for true relaxation, jubilation and camaraderie.
